Diamond Buying Guide — How to Buy a Diamond with Confidence

Buying a diamond doesn't have to be intimidating. With the right knowledge and the right guidance, it can be one of the most rewarding purchases you'll ever make. This guide walks you through everything you need to know before you buy.

Step 1 — Set Your Budget

Be realistic and honest about your budget before you start looking. Diamond prices vary enormously — a beautiful, certified diamond can be found at almost any budget if you know how to balance the 4Cs correctly.

A common question is "how much should I spend on an engagement ring?" The old marketing-driven answer was "two months salary" — this is a figure invented by a diamond company in the 1980s. Spend what you can comfortably afford. The significance of the ring is not in its price tag.

Step 2 — Understand the 4Cs and Their Priority

If you've read our education guides, you know the 4Cs: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat Weight. For most buyers, the order of priority should be:

1. Cut first — never compromise on cut. A beautifully cut diamond is a beautiful diamond.
2. Colour second — aim for G or H in white gold or platinum settings. I or J can be excellent in yellow gold.
3. Clarity third — VS1 or VS2 is the sweet spot. Eye-clean SI1 can offer outstanding value with expert guidance.
4. Carat fourth — choose size based on what remains in your budget after optimising the first three.

Step 3 — Choose a Shape

Shape is a personal preference. The most popular shapes for engagement rings in Australia are:

• Round Brilliant — the most popular. Maximum brilliance and fire. Timeless.
• Oval — elegant, appears larger than a round of the same weight. Very fashionable.
• Cushion — romantic, vintage feel. Soft square with rounded corners.
• Emerald Cut — sophisticated, architectural. Long, step-cut facets with a dramatic hall-of-mirrors effect.
• Pear — unique and striking. Elongates the finger beautifully.
• Princess Cut — modern, geometric. Second most popular after round.

If you're buying for a partner, pay attention to the jewellery they already wear. Their existing style will tell you a great deal about which shape they'd love.

Step 4 — Require a Certificate

Never purchase a significant diamond without an independent certificate from a reputable laboratory — GIA, DCLA, or HRD. The certificate is your proof of what you've bought, your protection against misrepresentation, and a key document for insurance purposes.

Step 5 — See the Diamond in Person

A certificate tells you about a diamond. Seeing it in person tells you everything else. Two diamonds with identical certificates can look very different — the position of inclusions, the cut proportions, the way the stone handles light in real conditions all matter enormously.

When buying a diamond, ask:

• Is this diamond independently certified, and by which laboratory?
• Is this diamond eye-clean?
• What are the cut proportions — table percentage, depth percentage, crown angle?
• Does this diamond have fluorescence, and how does it affect this particular stone?
• What is your returns or exchange policy?

Natural vs Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — chemically and optically identical to natural diamonds. However, they are manufactured rather than mined, and they have depreciated significantly in value since becoming widely available. Natural diamonds carry the value of rarity and provenance that manufactured stones do not.
