The 4Cs of Diamond Quality

Cut — The Most Important of the 4Cs

Cut is the single most important factor in a diamond's beauty. It determines how well the diamond interacts with light — how much it sparkles, how brilliant it appears, and how alive it looks on the finger. A poorly cut diamond will look dull regardless of its colour or clarity. A beautifully cut diamond will outshine a stone twice its price. At Diamond Imports, cut quality is never compromised.

Colour — From Colourless to Tinted

Diamonds are graded on a colour scale from D (completely colourless) to Z (noticeably yellow or brown). The closer to D, the rarer and more valuable the stone. In practice, the difference between adjacent grades is almost invisible to the naked eye — which is why expert guidance matters so much when choosing.

Clarity — Nature's Fingerprints

Almost all diamonds contain tiny natural characteristics called inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external). Clarity grades range from Flawless (FL) — no inclusions visible under 10x magnification — down to Included (I1, I2, I3). Most inclusions are invisible to the naked eye and have no impact on a diamond's beauty. Understanding clarity grades helps you find the best value without paying for perfection you can't see.

Carat Weight — Size Matters, But Not the Way You Think

Carat is a unit of weight, not size. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can look very different in size depending on how they are cut. A well-cut 0.90ct diamond will often look larger — and more beautiful — than a poorly cut 1.00ct stone. Carat weight affects price significantly, which is why understanding the other three Cs first is so important.

A diamond certificate (also called a grading report) is an independent assessment of a diamond's characteristics, produced by a gemological laboratory. At Diamond Imports, we only sell diamonds certified by the world's most respected laboratories:

• GIA — Gemological Institute of America. The global gold standard in diamond grading.
• DCLA — Diamond Certification Laboratory of Australia. Australia's leading independent diamond grading laboratory.

A certificate gives you independent verification of exactly what you are buying. Never purchase a significant diamond without one.

Natural Diamonds vs Lab-Grown Diamonds
