Diamond Fluorescence & Transparency
Fluorescence is one of the most misunderstood and most talked-about characteristics in diamond buying. It appears on every GIA, DCLA, and HRD certificate, yet most buyers — and many jewellers — don't fully understand what it means, when it matters, and when it doesn't.
At Diamond Imports, we examine fluorescence personally in every diamond we select. Our view, formed over more than 50 years of handling thousands of stones, is clear: fluorescence is neither automatically good nor automatically bad. What matters is how it affects that particular diamond — and only your eyes can tell you that.
What Is Diamond Fluorescence?
Fluorescence is the visible glow that some diamonds emit when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light — the kind found in sunlight, fluorescent tube lighting, and black lights. The glow is most commonly blue, though it can occasionally be yellow, orange, or white. It is caused by trace elements within the diamond's crystal structure — primarily nitrogen — that absorb UV energy and re-emit it as visible light.
In normal lighting conditions — indoors under incandescent or LED light, or in daylight — fluorescence is invisible. It can only be observed under UV light. This is a crucial point that many buyers overlook.
Fluorescence is a completely natural phenomenon. It is not a treatment, enhancement, or sign of inferior quality. It is simply a characteristic — like colour or clarity — that varies from stone to stone.
How Common Is It?
According to GIA research based on more than 26,000 diamonds submitted for grading, between 25% and 35% of all diamonds exhibit some degree of fluorescence. Of those, approximately 95% show blue fluorescence — and only around 10% demonstrate medium to very strong fluorescence. This means strongly fluorescent diamonds are actually rarer than non-fluorescent ones.
The GIA Fluorescence Scale
GIA grades fluorescence on the following scale, which appears on every GIA grading report:

|---|---|
| None | No fluorescence. The diamond shows no reaction under UV light. |
| Faint | A very slight glow, barely detectable even under UV light. No practical impact on appearance. |
| Medium | A noticeable glow under UV light. Rarely affects appearance in normal conditions. |
| Strong | A clear, visible glow under UV. Can be an asset or a concern depending on the diamond's colour grade and transparency. |
| Very Strong | An intense glow under UV. Requires careful inspection — in some diamonds this can create a hazy or milky appearance. In others it has no impact at all. |
Is Fluorescence Good or Bad?
This is genuinely a matter of the individual stone — not a blanket rule. The answer depends on two things: the diamond's colour grade, and its transparency.
For higher colour grades (D, E, F, G)
Strong blue fluorescence in top colour diamonds can, in some cases, create a slightly hazy, oily, or milky appearance — reducing the diamond's transparency and liveliness. For this reason, we are cautious with strong fluorescence in higher colour grades — and will always show you the diamond under multiple light sources before recommending it.
For lower colour grades (H, I, J, K and below)
This is where fluorescence becomes genuinely interesting — and where savvy buyers can find excellent value. Blue fluorescence counteracts the slight yellow or warm tint present in lower colour grades, making the diamond appear whiter and brighter in daylight. A well-cut I or J colour diamond with medium blue fluorescence can face up remarkably like a G or H — at a meaningfully lower price.

I call these 'show for dough' stones. They look exceptional, they cost less, and the fluorescence is doing something positive. Fluorescence & Price
- Diamonds graded D–F colour with Strong or Very Strong fluorescence typically sell at a discount of 5–25% compared to non-fluorescent equivalents.
- Diamonds graded G–H with Strong fluorescence may also be discounted, though less significantly.
- Diamonds graded I–K with medium to strong blue fluorescence can represent outstanding value — the fluorescence actively improves their face-up appearance.
- None or Faint fluorescence carries no price premium or discount in most cases.
What GIA Research Actually Says
GIA's extensive research findings are clear: in normal lighting, fluorescence is invisible even to trained gemologists. Strong fluorescence seldom negatively affects a diamond's beauty in everyday wear. A diamond's sparkle is determined primarily by its cut — not by whether it fluoresces. GIA does not classify fluorescence as a negative quality factor.
Diamond Transparency — The Factor Certificates Miss
Diamond transparency refers to how clearly and cleanly light passes through the stone. A highly transparent diamond appears bright, crisp, and alive. A diamond with poor transparency can look hazy, oily, or milky — even if its colour and clarity grades are excellent on paper.
There is currently no standardised grading scale for diamond transparency. It cannot be quantified on a certificate. It can only be assessed by looking at the diamond — comparing it against other stones under cool white light, incandescent (halogen) light, and natural daylight.
Critically: a non-fluorescent diamond can still look hazy or milky. Transparency issues are not caused exclusively by fluorescence. This is why it is dangerous to assume a non-fluorescent diamond is automatically more beautiful than a fluorescent one.
