Why GIA Is the Global Standard
GIA — the Gemological Institute of America — is the world's most respected and widely recognised diamond grading laboratory. Founded in 1931, GIA invented the modern 4Cs grading system and established the international standards for diamond grading that the entire industry uses today.
When a diamond carries a GIA certificate, you can be completely confident in the grading. GIA is independent, non-profit, and has no financial interest in the diamonds it grades. Its grading is recognised as the most consistent, accurate, and conservative in the world — which is precisely why it is the standard that buyers, jewellers, dealers, and insurers trust above all others.
A GIA certificate is also a diamond's most powerful resale document. Whether you are upgrading, insuring, or selling a diamond years down the track, a GIA grading report is universally understood and accepted — in Australia and in every diamond market in the world.
What a GIA Certificate Tells You
A GIA Diamond Grading Report documents every measurable characteristic of your diamond:
- Shape and cutting style — e.g. Round Brilliant, Oval, Emerald Cut
- Measurements — the diamond's exact dimensions in millimetres
- Carat weight — measured to five decimal places
- Colour grade — on the internationally recognised D–Z scale
- Clarity grade — FL (Flawless) through I3 (Included)
- Cut grade — for round brilliants: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, or Poor
- Polish and symmetry grades
- Fluorescence — None, Faint, Medium, Strong, or Very Strong
- Proportions diagram — table percentage, depth, crown and pavilion angles
- Clarity plot — a mapped diagram showing the location and nature of every inclusion
- Laser inscription registry — if the GIA report number has been inscribed on the girdle
Together these details give you a complete, objective picture of the diamond's quality that can be independently verified at any time on the GIA website using the report number.
The GIA Diamond Dossier®
For diamonds between 0.15ct and 1.99ct, GIA also offers the Diamond Dossier® — a compact version of the full grading report. The Dossier includes all the same 4Cs grading information and is distinguished by one important feature: the GIA report number is always micro-laser inscribed on the diamond's girdle as standard. The Dossier does not include a plotted clarity diagram, but carries the same grading rigour and the same GIA guarantee.
Verify Your GIA Certificate Online
Every GIA certificate can be verified instantly online. Enter the report number at gia.edu/report-check to confirm that the certificate is genuine, the details match the stone, and the diamond has not been altered since certification. Daniel actively encourages every customer to verify their certificate — it takes 30 seconds.
Why You Should Only Buy a Certified Diamond
A diamond without an independent certificate is a diamond you cannot verify. You are relying entirely on the seller's word for its colour, clarity, carat weight, and cut quality — four characteristics that together determine value, and that are impossible to assess accurately without professional equipment and training.
Not all certificates are equal — this matters
Some lesser-known grading laboratories have significantly more lenient standards than GIA. A diamond graded SI1 by a lenient laboratory may receive VS2 from GIA — a meaningful difference in quality and price. At Diamond Imports we use GIA as our primary certification. If a diamond is offered with a certificate from a laboratory you haven't heard of, treat it with caution.
Other Certificates We Carry
While GIA is our primary and preferred certification, a small number of diamonds in our collection also carry certificates from DCLA (Diamond Certification Laboratory of Australia) and HRD (Hooge Raad voor Diamant, Antwerp). Both are internationally recognised laboratories with rigorous grading standards and are accepted in the Australian diamond market.
