Diamond Certificates — Your Guarantee of Quality
A diamond certificate — also known as a grading report or diamond report — is an independent, expert assessment of a diamond's quality and characteristics. It is produced by a gemological laboratory, not the seller. Think of it as a diamond's passport: an objective document that tells you exactly what you're buying.
At Diamond Imports, every diamond we sell comes with a certificate from a recognised, reputable laboratory. We believe you should never purchase a significant diamond without one.
What a Certificate Tells You
A diamond grading report typically includes:
- Shape and cutting style — e.g. Round Brilliant, Oval, Emerald Cut
- Measurements — the diamond's dimensions in millimetres
- Carat weight — to five decimal places
- Colour grade — on the D-Z scale
- Clarity grade — FL through I3
- Cut grade — for round brilliants: Excellent through Poor
- Polish and symmetry grades
- Fluorescence — none, faint, medium, strong, very strong
- Proportions diagram — showing table, depth, crown and pavilion angles
- Clarity plot — a diagram showing the location and nature of inclusions
- Comments — any additional characteristics noted by the grader
The Laboratories Diamond Imports Uses
GIA — Gemological Institute of America
The GIA is the world's most respected and trusted gemological laboratory. Founded in 1931, GIA invented the modern 4Cs grading system and is recognised globally as the gold standard in diamond grading. A GIA certificate is accepted and respected by diamond dealers, jewellers, and buyers worldwide. When you see a GIA certificate, you can be confident the grading is consistent, conservative, and accurate.
DCLA — Diamond Certification Laboratory of Australia
The DCLA is Australia's premier independent diamond grading laboratory, based in Sydney. DCLA certificates are widely respected across the Australian and Asia-Pacific diamond industry. As an Australian business, Diamond Imports regularly works with DCLA-certified stones.
HRD — Hooge Raad voor Diamant
Based in Antwerp — the historic centre of the global diamond trade — HRD is one of Europe's most prestigious and respected diamond grading laboratories. HRD certificates are especially common for diamonds sourced through European diamond markets.
Are All Certificates Equal?
No. This is critically important to understand. Different laboratories have different grading standards, and some are considerably less strict than others. A diamond graded SI1 by one laboratory may be graded VS2 by GIA — a meaningful difference in value and quality.
Some lower-tier certificates are used precisely because they allow diamonds to be presented with better grades than they would receive from GIA or DCLA. At Diamond Imports, we only use laboratories with internationally recognised standards and consistent grading practices. We will always tell you which laboratory has graded a diamond and what that means for your purchase.
Laser Inscription
Many certified diamonds have their certificate number laser-inscribed on the girdle (edge) of the stone. This inscription is only visible under magnification and allows the diamond to be matched to its certificate at any time. GIA, DCLA, and HRD all offer laser inscription services. It's a useful security feature, particularly for larger stones.
Diamond Imports Tip
"A certificate from a reputable laboratory is non-negotiable for any significant purchase. It protects you at the point of purchase, and it protects the value of your diamond if you ever want to insure it, upgrade it, or sell it. Always ask for the certificate, and always check which laboratory issued it." — Daniel, Diamond Imports
